While I enjoyed this book and it had so much promise, it failed in the end. It needed some editorial assistance - not to delete, but to add to the book! The story moved very quickly with the two MCs getting together, delving into the supernatural, and forming a mating bond. Humans aren't supposed to know about shifters because it could prove calamitous, but Vaughn has no problem blabbing everything to Sam within minutes of a small child appearing on Sam's doorstep. This story could have used more momentum leading up to that revealing conversation. The author presents us with charming, even endearing characters, but leaves the readers hanging at the end of the book with a ton of unfinished business! A curious epilogue only adds to the loose ends AND, reading the synopsis of the next several books in the series, there is no mention of any of the characters from this prequel! Why???? Why invest in a story that screams for closure with none provided in future volumes? Very disappointing. When I was reading the first book in this series, I wondered about Henry’s pack, and actually stopped reading mid-book to search for earlier books that focused on it. I was really bummed when I didn’t find any, but mentioned in my review that I would happily read one if it became available. And here it is! I really enjoyed this glimpse into Henry’s past, but I admit I was disappointed that it didn’t cover more years. Perhaps the author could write a spin-off series about the Jerrick pack and its allies once she’s finished with The Chosen One series. (Hint, hint!)As with the first book, I read this through KU but ended up buying a copy for my collection because I liked it so much. (I wasn’t as fond of book two.) If you’re new to the series, I think you may want to consider reading this book first, as it doesn’t spoil anything for book one, and may actually help you to better understand some of the happenings.This book is well written and fairly well edited, although it would benefit from a final read-through by a careful proofreader. Some of the sentences would make more sense if the words were in a different order, and typos (peaked instead of peeked, for example) would have been caught, making the reading experience that much better. I still recommend the series, however, and look forward to reading the next book!
