It's becoming a habit of mine to start at the wrong end of the series, but reading the blurb to Jared and Eli's story sent me their way in an instance. This is the only book I've ever read that I ended up in tears during the first chapter, I did not expect it and it took me very much by surprise. It set the tone for the book though, I felt for Jared, his aching heart and bone crushing loneliness, the grief and the need to belong. And still so hopeful even when things went wrong. Which again made me hate our first meeting with Eli.There is so many emotions brought to life during their time together, and I love the humour, the easy going nature between the subs and the friendships. It's written in a way that draws you in and makes you care about each of their story, which is just hinted at to make you curious of course. And will now send me to read the rest of the series. I've getting through all the books and they end in a proper manner. But this one ... it ends on a cliff-hanger of gigantic oral proportions, sort of similar to all those old-fashioned stories where a chapter would end with a detective saying "...and the name of the murderer is - " and all of this in an epilogue, no less, an epilogue that doesn't even feature the main characters. An epilogue has to wrap things up, not end on a statement that drops an open-ended bombshell. This epilogue should have been, maybe, chapter 1 of the next book.Okay, I'm pretty sure, by process of elimination, I know what is coming up in the next book but that's beside the point. A professional writer would never finish a book like these authors have done. The story, itself, is okay, however from the beginning to about halfway through , it appears to me, to lack warmth; it almost seems like writing by rote. Alex, Scott, Dorian - their stories were full of variety and kept me reading. I plodded through this book out of loyalty. Through most of the book, the older Jared read more like he was a twenty year old.Oh dear.
